episode 48: Girl Scout cookies, Sean Evans, and dinner in Georgetown
we’re talking Girl Scout cookies to support trans scouts, an interview with Sean Evans, and a girly dinner in Georgetown!
a short little newsletter today for y’all! food news is (shockingly!) not the most important thing in the face of our crumbling democracy!! ha ha!
to the one and only, Sean Evans 💕
as a years-long Hot Ones fan, I am a sucker for any content on one of the best interviewers on the internet, Sean Evans. Bon Appétit did a profile on Evans as his team enters their 26th season of the Youtube show. he talks about growth in his interviewing skills, and why he thinks the show has been so successful. it’s a short piece, but nice to see Evans being interviewed instead of the interviewer. (and see who he has a crush on, here 😎)
move over Americano… ☕️
Canadian coffee shops are staging an espresso protest! many shops have renamed the Americano, a “Canadiano” in response to recent tariff wars instigated by Trump. the coffee drink made from espresso and water is commonly called an Americano. Kicking Horse Coffee, a coffee company based in British Columbia, urged other Canadian coffee shops to name the drink something more patriotic, as they had been calling the drink the “Canadiano” for 16 years. as other shops have taken up the move, they claim it’s not political - just a showing of Canadian pride.
Girl Scout cookie season! 🍪
it’s Girl Scout cookie season! if you’re interested in ordering cookies, here is a list of trans Girl Scouts you can consider buying from! a substacker compiled all the kids and their bios here, I would suggest picking someone who hasn’t already met their sales goal from the middle of the list.
egg-less dessert ideas 🍫
eggs are so expensive these days, we simply cannot waste them on baked goods! I was thinking about this the other day when making snacks for a Valentine’s day party (to which I brought chocolate bark) but here are more ideas! I especially liked the recipes for pudding and panna cotta - let’s get creative!
dairy corner: raw milk, yogurt 🥛
yogurt: as i’ve been on my journey of making yogurt at home - i’ve come to realize that yogurt is much hardier than we think. this NYT Cooking article gives an overview of the wonders of yogurt. yogurt can last at room temperature for longer than other types of dairy, because it’s pasteurization process heats the milk for longer, and the pH of the yogurt is required to be at a level where most food-borne pathogens can’t grow. if things are added to the yogurt, like fruits and granola, it can throw off the pH. while yogurt can go bad, very few bacteria can survive the fermentation process, including the bird flu virus!
milk: we’ve talked about raw milk before on this substack (here!) but it’s part of a larger narrative on milk as a whole. consumption of whole milk in 2024 rose 3.2 percent and consumption of plant milk fell 5.9 percent. the nutritional factors of milk have grown in importance and plant milk has become expensive and garnered skepticism because of the added oils and emulsifiers. milk has been big in pop culture too, thinking Haley Bieber’s Rhode glazing milk products or Nicole Kidman in Babygirl. but the popularity around pasteurized milk is tainted with the MAHA raw milk discourse, and the pop culture side of that is connected tradwife folks too. read more about milk’s cultural moment here.
restaurant review: La Bonne Vache 🐮
its girly pop dinner time! went back to a spot we tried last year when it opened, a French bistro in Georgetown, La Bonne Vache. their menu is full of small plates, burgers, and desserts, and they have a developed low-ABV cocktail menu too. I loved my vermouth drink, the crispy cod sandwich, and of course, this fantastic chocolate mousse!! its a perfect spot for drinks and fries with the girlies. (reference to girly pop dinner here in my newsletter, and OG video!) post here, pics below.

home cooking 🧑🍳
me and my blender have reunited! i’ve been really into berry and PB smoothies lately. I also got some poblano peppers from Trader Joe’s and made these baked chile rellenos. they’re nothing like real chile rellenos tbh, it’s basically a better version of a stuffed bell pepper, but still tasty! i’ve also been focused on working through some pantry staples, so I made a peanut-soy sauce for noodles with frozen vegetables. snooze! I promise i’ll start cooking something more exciting soon!
thanks for reading, everyone!
